Intellectual Writing Layout

I photocopied a few dozen spreads from several essay / critically written texts from authors such as Adorno, Barthes, Derrida..etc. With them I picked apart the key elements of what makes an intellectual book layout look so.

With the aim of referencing from 'Elements of Typographic Style,' a book suggested to be by Jo Gilmore I was able to piece together a suitable set of guidelines to apply to my initial layout ideas.

Pt Size - The most effective pt sizes were those that were small, around 10 - 11 pt, this gave it an edge of sophistication, as in semiotic terms, small type is related to people who read a lot and can stand to look at large amounts of text. Going above 11.2pt made the text too simple, a more intermediate level of writing aimed at a semi informed audience.

Leading - The leading was most commonly quite spacious. Most probably to aid reading quickly by picking up on the form of each word. Also, as these are intellectual books they give space for the reader to take note. 10pt on 13pt for example.

Paragraphs - The books that were split into shot chapters used indentation, around 3mm. This is to create the impression that there is a more dense amount of information within the chapters. The more lengthy essays especially used line breaks. This in my opinion gives time for reflection, especially if a particularly poignant issue has been raised.

Format - The books were all of similar size, comfortable to old, but not cumbersome or awkwardly small. Around 210mm - 250mm in height and 160mm - 175mm wide.

Grid - The grids were based around the golden section, thought not all were. Some were aligned slightly off centre, towards the centre gutter, but not quite meeting the golden section.

Footnotes - For books that had a large amount of references; usually a reflective piece of writing referring to other texts and writers, as well as outside sources, the references had a page or two to their own at the end of each chapter. For those book with a only a few references, space was left at the bottom of each page.

Appendix - The appendix did not have much about them to remark on. Very straight forward uninspired lists. I do not want to conform to this trend.
