Now, i'm a rock climber so you would think I had some sort of inside knowledge...wrong. There is nothing more to rock climbing that meets the eye. A person on a rock.
So when the challenge comes around to design a rock climbing logo there are not many visual references to draw upon. Then when your client wants it to reflect the relaxed and happy elements of climbing it becomes even harder. No silhouettes of people rock climbing, nothing happy there, a rock...nothing happy about rocks, and believe me I tried to make them happy. Somehow I managed to lose several sheets of logo ideas which is deeply disturbing, because I have a feeling I struck gold on one of them but can't remember what the devil it was.
However I am happy where I ended up, yes it is a mountain not a rock, but thats all part of graphic design isn't it -- making mental connections with your audience. It draws on thoughts of the North Face, Mamut, Rock Hopper.. and so on.
The logos themselves are happy and relaxed, in that they are rounded and smooth. The colour reflects nature and tranquility. I have yet to pitch these to the 'President' of the climbing club. Feedback is needed. I have come up with these 3 variations varying in levels of commercial prowess. None are full commercial as that is not what he was after, the furthest left image is the most commercial as it has a more rigid form. If he doesn't like that then I know more commercial is bad.
I am sending them over to him tomorrow with some context added to them, stationary and merchandise.
