Baggy Clothes Presentation

Try to see past the retro/hippie graphics please.

At the start of research I was thinking on a very basic level.
Why might baggy clothes be good?
They are comfy and relaxing, they are warm... and other such things.
My simple closed question questionnaire backed up what I had thought.

I wanted to explore the fashions of the ages to see if baggy clothes had ever made a large impact anywhere. After the 60s and the Woodstock era there was a huge trend to wear baggy clothes. This progressed through into the 70s where fashion because much more liberal and outgoing. And it even seemed to bring a generation together. As in the fashion was widely accepted through the classes and races. I thought this was quite interesting that baggy clothes had some impact on the state of society for the better.

After that I thought about baggy clothes in modern fashion, but that seemed to detract away from the point of baggy clothes being comfortable and relaxing. So instead I thought about the waste of material in fashion. Then also about the contrast to fashion, ie, eco-clothes, clothes that are made to last and also the kind of people who wear them.
This led to research into companies who use only environmentally friendly materials and fair trade.

However after reviewing and criting my ideas; it seemed that the most basic concept was the best and most clear. And also that I should focus on trousers specifically as that was a more focused and coherent idea.

Baggy trousers are good because they are comfy/relaxing/liberating.

But then I remembered what I had thought about to do with rock climbing, so I really wanted a way to link the two together.

That is what i am working on now.

What is Good...? part 1

What is good indeed?

Well lots of things are good; but recently I have found myself wanting to be more comfortable, and more free. So I have thrown aside the skinnies and the fitted Ts re-joined the world of the baggy clothes. And i'm loving it!

So here it is;
BAGGY CLOTHES ARE GOOD

...

In addition. Another reason for me wearing baggy clothes again is that I have recently began rock climbing. It is a very liberating and fulfilling sport which is based outdoors, obviously. It is hard to keep in touch with the side of me which enjoys being outdoors and amongst nature while here living in the middle of a city. It puts into perspective what is important to myself; being comfortable, being able to move freely and not having to worry about fitting in with the latest fashions.

Therefore I also think rock climbing is good, it is a slight dilemma I face. Which to choose BAGGY CLOTHES or ROCK CLIMBING.

Rock climbing is much harder because it is not a thing. It is something you do. Perhaps I need to find a compromise between the two.

Things I Don't Know

Ok I have been advised to write up a list of things i don't know.

The main problem with things that you don't know is that you don't know what they are until someone tells you, you should know it.

Also things that I do know I don't know will be constantly being taken awayd, depending on how much info I am saturating.

Some I imagine will be quite vague, others will be more specific.

The List:

- How to use illustrator at a very capable standard
- How to code html
- How to compile a portfolio
- How to write a CV
- How to initialize a phone call with a design agency

Studies from Summer brief - Edibles

Basically this is cool. 2 colour print on a sweet rustic brown paper. Nice touch with the string as the hook as well. All really cool, got the image nailed down. Its all about image and continuity. Remember that.

Was browsing lovelypackaging.com and noticed that sweet tins often had really sharp designs. They are nice and detailed yet reserved somehow. The conmbination of type and image is great, these 2 examples are the two which i thought were the best. I really want to get into all this tiny repeated detailed stuff, and then actually create something!

I like packaging, its true.

I have done a few quick studies of image and type, very rough studies mind you. Hand drawn onto tracing paper.
I think this is quite nice tho. nice homely design, maybe the hand drawn text is a good idea...
Added some colour to this one. I don't think it has really worked. There is only so much you can do with an onion. Claiming that it is 'giant' just doesn't quite pack the punch really.

This is better. DRAW ON THE FOOD!
Its so simple. Some food doesn't work however. I tried drawing on some bread, it just wouldn't take.

These work well. They look healthy and surprisingly tasty despite being covered in ink.

Studies from Summer brief - Smokables

Yes. Smokables. This is the book I used as reference for the 4x colour prints. Lorenzo's first fun brief for us. And to introduce you to some of the stuff I have gathered here is a lovely pile of cig butts...

Right, here we have a couple of really nice old/retro cigarette packets. Again the limited colours look really great here. At the beginning of this year we are being provoked tho think more carefully about colour selection; for design and also as manufacturing constraints.

I gathered a few cigarette packets. Looked at them, and then cut them apart until they were in their net forms. There is something quite arty about the nets alone me thinky.

For those astute followers you may have noticed that these are the nets i use in the full colour print for my 4x colour prints brief. I overlapped them and changed the colour balances to make it all bright and vibrant...nice.
...

And here we have a couple of cig packet design for my make-believe cigarette company.
I called it 'Mitigate' or in less flamboyant English, 'relaxed'.
This word also reflects the mood of my summer so it all ties in loosely to my summer proj.

I like them both for different reasons. The black and gold design is nice because it is believable and more contemporary looking. It is more controlled and refined. However I really like the collage style design, using recycled images of other cigarette packets from the 60s. It is way more funky and has so much more personality...if you are the kind of person who likes cigarettes with a personality...

...

You have probably seen these rips packets before. I however hadn't and was like, dude, they are cool, ill take them all. Generally i just like the swirly ornaments and continuity between sizes.
My logo design for the 4x colour prints was inspired by the 100% aesthetic old cigar logos on such brands as Monte Cristo, Romeo Y Julietta, Cohiba...etc.

Finally, the humble stubbed out cigarette stock image. I figured if I was going to gather visual info in cigarettes i should probably pick a few of the most recognisable images. Realizing that this was one of them i thought it would be perfect to use as a NO SMOKING pictogram, which is the 1 colour print from the 4x colour prints.

Studies from Summer brief - Drinkables

Hey there, I have selected a few examples of packaging design which I think are pretty awesome and also relevant to the beginning of the year.

These 3 designs are all good examples of limited colour usage.

This 'AQUAPAX' design looks like it could be a 2 colour + tints print on a white stock. Offset-litho printed I reckon.

This next design has a nice repeated pattern. And I know... I am not on a printed textile course, but sometimes it is good to cross subjects for inspiration. Which is why I went off and had a play with some pattern making; I will blog that in a bit.
Finally, I like this design for its simplicity. Also I have always liked little motifs and ornaments. The kind of decorative design you might find on a beer logo or a wine label.
They are simple, smooth and I have always felt their shapes quite relaxing.

I found these bottles of juice concentrate. 'Le Mortuacienne'
I actually got these in TK Max of all places. They weren't even cheap!
Anyway, i thought other than looking at the designs on the labels i would try out some product photography. Mainly because while browsing the likes of fffound.com and lovelypackaging.com the quality and clean cut style of the photography really helps boost the aesthetic of the product. so...voila!

Here are some nice bottles...
